1
Combine the rinsed rice and water in a heavy pot. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a steady simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the rice grains begin to break down and the mixture thickens to a coarse, creamy porridge. The base is ready when the texture is no longer brothy but holds a slow, heavy roll when stirred.

2
Add the pumpkin and sweet potato cubes to the pot. Continue to simmer, stirring, until both are yielding when pressed but not yet collapsed — the sweet potato should give cleanly under a spoon's edge.

3
Stir in the corn kernels. This is where the dish lives or dies: the porridge must remain thick and heterogeneous — corn intact, pumpkin softened, rice broken to creaminess — not thinned or uniform. If the porridge tightens excessively, add water in small increments to maintain a dense, cohesive body. The finished texture is golden-orange, heavy, and visibly mixed; no single element should dominate the surface.

4
Add the cassava leaves and kangkung. Stir through and continue to cook until the leaves are wilted and just tender but retain slight resistance when tasted — they should not dissolve into the porridge.

5
Remove the pot from the heat. Fold in the basil leaves. The basil should release its fragrance immediately on contact with the hot porridge — a clean, faintly anise-edged aroma rising from the pot signals the dish is ready to serve.

Ladle the porridge into deep bowls. Serve alongside fried ikan asin, sambal dabu-dabu, and shrimp crackers presented separately at the table.
