  1. 1
Assign each quadrant a category before any food is prepared: one for raw (sashimi), one for grilled protein (yakimono), one for seasonal vegetables and small items (hassun), one for rice. No two quadrants may share a cooking method. This division is fixed — any departure collapses the structural logic of the box.
  2. 2
Wipe the interior walls of each quadrant with sake, then apply a light zest of yuzu to the walls. The box should carry a faint, clean fragrance before any food enters it.
  3. 3
Prepare each quadrant's contents separately and to completion before any plating begins. The hassun quadrant must reflect the current season without ambiguity; the yakimono must be grilled, not simmered or steamed. Ensure the sashimi is held cold and the grilled item has returned to room temperature. Each preparation must be finished and rested before the box is touched.
  4. 4
Place bamboo leaf, shiso, or decorative paper in each quadrant to create a base. This is where the dish lives or dies: each quadrant must read as a complete, self-contained composition — visually balanced, with deliberate negative space. An overfilled quadrant destroys the aesthetic entirely. Do not fill to the walls. The eye must rest somewhere in each section.
  5. 5
Fill the rice quadrant last. The portion of rice sets the visual scale against which all other quadrant portions are judged. Rice should be level, cleanly mounded, and not compressed. When all four quadrants are filled, the box read as a whole must present contrast — in color, texture, height, and cooking method — across all four sections simultaneously.
  6. 6
Before presenting or closing the lid, tilt the box gently. No item should shift or migrate across the quadrant divider. If transport is intended, the contents of each quadrant must be composed with enough internal structure to hold position.
