CheckMate Queen Taken Chardonnay

Okanagan Valley, Canada

CheckMate Artisanal Winery's top chardonnay from their chess-themed prestige program at the southern end of the Okanagan, founded by Anthony von Mandl (also of Mission Hill). Each wine is named after a chess move; Queen Taken is the flagship. Whole-cluster pressed, barrel-fermented in French oak, extended lees ageing — the production method is explicitly Burgundian in every detail, and the ambition is to produce Canada's benchmark chardonnay. No other BC producer invests this level of resource in the variety.

• fish course: Lobster bisque's extreme richness demands a white wine of real texture and acid backbone. CheckMate's mineral focus cuts through the cream while its body matches the bisque's weight. The brandy reduction in the bisque bridges the wine's own development notes.
• starter: Queen Taken's full-bodied, oak-influenced Chardonnay with its textured, creamy mid-palate mirrors lobster bisque's own richness — the wine has the structure to hold its identity against the dish's intensity.
• main: Queen Taken's full, oak-spiced Chardonnay structure and creamy texture mirror the butter-poached lobster's richness; chanterelle amplifies the wine's earthy complexity while tarragon adds herbal lift against the cream.
