Lake Country

The rolling country north of Kelowna between Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake, where the Okanagan's northern character asserts itself in lifted aromatics and natural acidity. This is riesling, pinot gris, and chardonnay territory; some producers are demonstrating that pinot noir achieves real complexity in the cooler exposures. 50th Parallel Estate is the benchmark address.

Year Rating Notes
2024 94 Lake Country's 2024 was a season of beautiful balance — warm days, lake-cooled nights, and a long harvest window that allowed both white and red varieties to reach full aromatic development. 50th Parallel Estate are reporting their finest vintage in a decade.
2023 87 Moderate, well-balanced season. Wines emphasise elegance and freshness over concentration.
2022 94 Ideal conditions throughout. Lake Country established its credentials for Pinot Noir and cool-climate whites in this vintage.
2021 90 Heat dome followed by perfect autumn conditions. Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris showed exceptional aromatic intensity.
2020 80 Smoke-compromised vintage. Lake Country's northern position provided partial insulation but harvest-period smoke was problematic for thin-skinned varieties.
2014 92 Lake Country's 2014 captured both the season's warmth and the moderate influence of Okanagan Lake. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay excelled, showing the lifted, floral character that distinguishes this northern stretch of the Okanagan from the more powerful South.
2013 93 Lake Country's 2013 matched the broader Okanagan landmark vintage. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay both excelled in conditions of rare balance and consistency — wines from this vintage represent some of the finest LC has produced.
2012 89 Lake Country's 2012 was warm and produced solid Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The lake influence prevented the worst of the South Okanagan heat extremes.
