Golden Mile Bench

An eight-kilometre benchland running north from Osoyoos along the west side of Highway 97, named for the historic gold rush that swept through in 1859. The south-facing terraces accumulate exceptional heat on well-drained gravel soils — conditions that produce some of Canada's most structured and age-worthy reds. Merlot and cabernet-family varieties achieve real complexity; riesling from higher elevations adds a distinctive counterpoint.

Year Rating Notes
2024 95 Golden Mile Bench's 2024 was a benchmark season for this compact, prestigious BC sub-appellation. Balanced heat accumulation on the chalky-glacial soils and a clean harvest with no smoke events produced wines of exceptional mineral precision alongside the Bench's signature structural depth.
2023 91 South-facing schist slopes accumulated optimal heat despite a cooler overall Okanagan season. Late harvest confirmed full ripeness. Syrah and Cabernet Franc showed varietal character of the highest order. Yield restrained by the bench's thin soils.
2022 96 The bench's south-facing aspect captured every degree of 2022's exceptional warmth. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon ripened to full phenolic maturity with minimal irrigation stress. NK'Mip, Burrowing Owl, and Tinhorn Creek all produced benchmark block designates. The finest Golden Mile Bench vintage recorded.
2021 87 Heat spike moderated by schist's thermal mass and high elevation. Vines with deep root systems performed best. Syrah showed resilience; Cab Franc slightly irregular. Altitude vineyards above 500m outperformed lower blocks significantly.
2020 93 No smoke; long, clean season. Altitude moderation gave excellent acid retention in a warm year. One of the cleanest and most balanced Golden Mile Bench vintages in recent memory. All varieties excelled. Accessible now and capable of ageing.
2017 91 Strong follow-up to 2016. The bench's natural heat accumulation and drainage produced structured reds with excellent ageing prospects.
2016 95 The Golden Mile Bench's unique south-facing slopes and high-desert soils produced wines of remarkable concentration and mineral precision. Syrah and Bordeaux blends were both exceptional.
2015 92 Extreme heat on the south-facing Golden Mile Bench produced Syrah and Bordeaux varieties of maximum concentration. The 2016 later surpassed in balance, but 2015 established the modern quality floor for the sub-GI.
2014 94 Golden Mile Bench's 2014 was defined by the season's heat accumulation combined with the Bench's characteristic soils — glacial till over chalk-sandy loam — producing wines of striking structural elegance and mineral precision. Cabernet Franc and Merlot excelled.
2013 94 Golden Mile Bench's 2013 delivered wines of precision and elegance. The Bench's glacial soils responded to the balanced season by producing structured reds with remarkable finesse — less power than 2014, but arguably more complexity and longevity.
