Indigenous North American food traditions are built on the most extensive and specific wild food knowledge in North America — the botanical expertise of thousands of years of relationship with specific plant communities. Each nation has its specific regional plant vocabulary; the documentation of this knowledge (through ethnobotanical research and through the Indigenous food sovereignty movement) reveals a botanical intelligence that Western science is only beginning to appreciate.
