Selamatan: The Communal Blessing Meal

Selamatan (from *selamat* — safe, blessed) is the foundational Javanese communal meal ritual — held for any occasion requiring blessing or protection: birth, circumcision, marriage, death, house moving, planting, harvest, or simply because the household feels the need for communal spiritual maintenance. It is not a celebration but a ceremony of solidarity — neighbours, family, and community members gather, a prayer (doa) is spoken by the senior male or a religious leader, and the food is shared. The selamatan is not defined by the occasion but by the act of communal sharing — the meal is both the substance of the blessing and its vehicle.
