Chichibu single malt whisky finished in Japanese mizunara (Quercus mongolica) casks, a uniquely Japanese oak that imparts distinctive incense, sandalwood, and Asian spice notes impossible to replicate with European or American oak. Mizunara is extraordinarily difficult to work with — it leaks, cracks, and requires decades to impart its character effectively — but the results, when successful, are among the most distinctive whisky expressions in the world.
