Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Vosne-Romanée, France
DRC produces from six Grand Cru monopoles and major holdings in the greatest vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. Biodynamic farming throughout. All wines are unfiltered. The winemaking is deliberately minimal — traditional Burgundian methods unchanged for generations. New oak is used judiciously — typically 100% new for the Grand Crus but the wine absorbs it without domination due to the extract and concentration of the fruit. The estate employs no guest winemakers and accepts no outside consultants. The wines are sold exclusively through a strict négociant allocation system; no direct-to-consumer sales.
DRC is the world's most revered wine producer. A single bottle of La Romanée-Conti routinely sells at auction for $30,000–$50,000 USD. The estate is a joint venture — 50% owned by the de Villaine family, 50% by the Leroy family (Lalou Bize-Leroy departed in 1992 following a dispute). The wines are essentially impossible to buy at retail.
