Henri Gouges
Philosophy
The founding family of estate-bottled Nuits-Saint-Georges — Henri Gouges began bottling his own wines in 1929, pioneering the concept of domaine wine that would transform Burgundy in the 20th century. The estate (now run by the fifth generation) farms 14 hectares including some of Nuits's finest Premier Crus: Les Saint-Georges, Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, and Les Pruliers. The wines are among Burgundy's most consistently age-worthy.
Reputation
Henri Gouges is consistently rated among Nuits-Saint-Georges's top three producers — the Les Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes and Les Vaucrains have received 95-98 points. The estate's white Nuits (a Pinot Blanc mutation called Pinot Gouges) is one of Burgundy's most unusual and intriguing curiosities.
