Bodegas Terras Gauda

Rías Baixas, Spain
Cold maceration followed by native yeast fermentation in stainless steel; sur-lie aging without malolactic conversion. Patented native yeasts isolate terroir expression. Each varietal separately vinified before precision blending. Individually numbered bottles with hand-wrapped O Rosal cuvées.
Founded in 1989 by José María Fonseca Moretón on the right bank of the lower Miño River, Terras Gauda took its name from the ancient Suebi kingdom's designation for the land combined with the Latin word for joy. Situated in O Rosal, the southernmost subzone of Rías Baixas where schist-rich soils and Atlantic maritime influence converge, the estate rose to prominence through dedicated restoration of native Galician varieties—particularly Caiño Blanco, saved from near-extinction.
AllocationFounded year discrepancy: multiple sources cite 1989 (Trinchero/TFE, SDFF, Decántalo, One Stop Wine Shop) but Wine Scholar Guild and One Stop cite 1990. Using 1989 as majority consensus. Hectares reported as >160 in multiple sources; converted to 162 using 400 acres conversion (1.4 acres/hectare). No organic or biodynamic certification found; Better Soil project mentions 'organic intensification management' but this appears to be a sustainable agriculture program, not formal organic certification. Practises non-invasive treatments and native yeast fermentation but lacks formal certifications. UK presence strong (multiple retailers) but no named importer identified; US importer confirmed as Trinchero Family Wine and Spirits. Japan distributor not located. ISO 9001 certification in quality management mentioned by one source but not date-specific. Production figures consistently 1.5 million bottles. Cross-producer parallels limited to Martín Códax (same subzone, quality focus) due to lack of comparable boutique O Rosal producers in research results. Succession currently transitioning with Antón and Carmen progressively assuming roles.
