Chalone Vineyard

United States
Limestone-driven terroir expression through estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of mineral austerity and ageability; revival of malolactic fermentation in white wines and barrel-aging techniques pioneered by Dick Graff, establishing Burgundian-style architecture in California fruit. Complex, mineral-inflected profiles reflecting 1,800-foot elevation, extreme diurnal swings, and decomposed granite soils.
Charles Tamm, wandering California in search of soil similar to that of his native Burgundy, discovered the property in 1919 and planted Chenin Blanc on the north slope of Chalone Peak at 1,800 feet. The spare, well-drained limestone-based soils, limited rainfall, and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who made his first commercial vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay.
AllocationChalone is sole winery within Chalone AVA (designated 1982 as first in Monterey County). Corporate history complex: founded by Tamm (1919), revived by Dick Graff (1965), formed as Gavilan Vineyards Inc. (1969), became Chalone Wine Group Inc., acquired by Diageo (2005), sold to Foley Family Wines (2016). Producer web materials claim founding in 1919 by Tamm but commercial label production began 1960 (Togni), modern era 1966 (Graff). Estate spans ~1,000 acres with ~250 planted; sources cite 225 planted acres. Practicing sustainable viticulture with integrated pest management but no organic/biodynamic certification found in search results. Production volumes not disclosed. Current winemaker Greg Freeman (per recent tasting notes). Distribution through Southern Glazer's nationally. No dedicated UK/Japan importers identified. Chenin Blanc from 1919 vines remains estate signature alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Historical 1974 Chardonnay ranked 3rd Judgment of Paris (1976), 1st in 1978 repeat tasting. Emphasis on terroir-driven winemaking consistent across multiple sources. | Importer overflow captured (importer_us): "Foley Family Wines (distributor via Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits)"
