Château Latour
Philosophy
The First Growth most respected for longevity. François Pinault (Kering luxury group) purchased Latour in 1993. In 2012, Latour withdrew from the en primeur (futures) system entirely — a landmark decision that changed the Bordeaux market. Now releases wines when deemed ready. The grand vin's 'Enclos' (the walled vineyard immediately around the tower) produces the most age-worthy Pauillac — 50-year bottles are the expectation, not the exception. Second wine: Les Forts de Latour (a wine in its own right, superior to many First Growths).
Reputation
Latour's withdrawal from the en primeur system was the most significant structural challenge to Bordeaux's futures market in its history. The 2012 decision caused other châteaux to consider the same; none of similar stature has followed.
