Domaine Jean-François Mérieau
Loire Valley, France
Philosophy
Natural fermentation in concrete tanks with no commercial yeasts; extended aging on lees in neutral vessels to preserve terroir expression. The cellar, carved into limestone from the 14th century, imparts mineral restraint. Hand-harvested old-vine Côt and diverse Loire varieties ferment by wild yeast alone, yielding wine of disciplined fruit and underlying earth.
Reputation
The estate's lineage stretches to 1886, rooted in the Cher Valley's clay-limestone hillsides. Widowed after the Second World War, Georgina began wine production alone; her daughter Paulette and son-in-law Jean built the domaine's economic foundation. Their son Jacky raised its renown through meticulous viticulture. Jean-François, the fourth generation, assumed control in 2000 and has since restored old-vine parcels to their fullest expression, working with hand and horse-drawn plow to honour Touraine's forgotten terroirs.
