Domaine de la Solitude
Rhône Valley, France
Philosophy
Minimalist cellar practice: partial destemming, separate parcel vinification in concrete vats and stainless steel, ten percent new French oak aging. Florent Lançon's 'edible vineyard' integrates heritage olives, citrus, and diverse flora into the working landscape—a philosophy of biodiversity and regenerative land stewardship that marks the modern signature.
Reputation
The Domaine traces its lineage to the Barberini family of Rome, descendants of which settled in Avignon during the papal court's relocation in the 14th century. From a dowry marriage in the 17th century—Hélène Barberini to Claude Martin—emerged what became the estate; by the 18th century, ancestor Paul Martin was among France's first to bottle and export wine under the name 'Vin de la Solitude.' The modern Lançon family has stewarded the property since the 1970s, with Florent Lançon (eighth generation, since 2008) transforming it into a biodynamic exemplar.
