The reputation — the story that sells at the table

Pétrus 1947 is considered one of the two or three greatest wines ever made — 14% alcohol, residual sugar from incomplete fermentation, an almost port-like richness. The 1961, 1964, 1982, 2000, and 2009 are the modern era benchmarks.

Practice
The most celebrated and expensive red wine in the world that has no official classification (Pomerol has never created a classification). The Moueix family (Jean-Pierre Moueix, now Jean-Claude Moueix) manages the estate. The defining soil is the plateau of blue clay in the centre of Pomerol — this clay's ability to retain water creates consistently riper Merlot while the Cabernet Franc that normally joins Merlot in Bordeaux rarely ripens well here. Harvested in the afternoon — the Pétrus team waits for morning dew to evaporate, then picks before the afternoon heat. Result: perfect physiological ripeness in every vintage. Also: no sorting table — every berry picked by hand to the standard required.
