The reputation — the story that sells at the table
The 1947 Cheval Blanc was fermented naturally during a brutal heat wave — the wine had 13.5% natural alcohol and 10+ g/L residual sugar from incomplete fermentation. Tasters describe it as 'voluptuous,' 'caramelised,' 'unlike any other wine.' Peter Koff (MS) describes it as the finest wine he has tasted in 40 years.
Practice
The most unusual First Growth: Cabernet Franc dominant (typically 55–60%) — unusual for the Right Bank, where Merlot normally dominates. The sandy clay soils of Saint-Émilion's northwest sector suit Cabernet Franc exceptionally well. The 1947 vintage is considered by many experts the greatest wine ever produced — an extraordinary, almost-sweet concentration from a heat-stressed vintage fermented without temperature control. LVMH purchased Cheval Blanc along with Château d'Yquem in 1998.
