Kolfok
Burgenland, Austria
Philosophy
Gravity-movement; carbonic maceration of whole-cluster berries in sealed vessels, extended sur-lie aging in large neutral Austrian oak, minimal to zero sulfur addition at bottling. Unfiltered, unfined expressions of terroir over intervention.
Reputation
In the dialect of Burgenland, Kolfok denotes an unconventional thinker—a fitting name for Stefan Wellanschitz's 2013 project born from a family estate in Neckenmarkt dating to the early 19th century, when this eastern Austrian terroir belonged to Hungary. Perched on the Ödenburg Mountains near the Hungarian border, Wellanschitz's vineyards rise to 500 meters, where alpine slate and gneiss yield to volcanic loam in an intersection of continental Pannonian and mountain climates.
