Massican

United States
Mediterranean white wines from Italian varieties grown in California. Hand-harvested at daybreak, whole-cluster pressed, settled overnight, fermented separately by vineyard in neutral oak and stainless steel with native yeasts. Minimal intervention: no fining agents, no cold stabilization, sterile-filtered. Bottled in lightweight recycled glass.
Founded in 2009 by winemaker Dan Petroski, Massican takes its name from Monte Massico, the Massican hills near Naples where Petroski's Italian-American family originates. The house emerged as Napa Valley's first and only exclusively white-wine producer, a deliberate pivot from the region's Cabernet-dominant tradition—Petroski's answer to California's Mediterranean climate and his own cellar palate.
AllocationMassican is a negoce house (sources fruit from 17-20 vineyard partners across Napa, Sonoma, Lodi, Mendocino, Clarksburg). Sold to E. & J. Gallo Winery on 30 August 2023; Dan Petroski remains as winemaker/founder under partnership. No physical winery building until future construction. Production ramped from 400 cases (2009) to 7,500 cases (2023), expected to reach 10,000 with Gallo support. Farming: ~48% of partner vineyards organically certified; Petroski works toward 60% conversion. Napa Green board member (Chair of Environmental Stewardship). Distribution primarily direct-to-consumer mailing list plus selective fine wine shops/restaurants in CA, NY, FL, TX. Enotria & Coe listed as exclusive distributor for Annia/Gemina (recent). Website and social channels robust; founder highly visible in wine media (VinePair 2024 Winemaker of Year, SF Chronicle 2017, Food & Wine 2022). Appellation transitioned to California (no longer Napa Valley-exclusive) post-2023 sale to align with expanded sourcing. Language: English only on labels and website. No formal organic or biodynamic certification sought; practicing organic on ~48% of sourced fruit. No Demeter, CCOF, or formal certification bodies listed, though Napa Green affiliation confirmed. | Importer overflow captured (importer_us): 'Gallo Luxury Wine Group (Lux Wines/Maze Row)' | Importer overflow captured (importer_other): 'Enotria & Coe (UK/EU distribution for Annia and Gemina)'
