Opus One
United States
Philosophy
Hand-harvested fruit sorted with meticulous care into gravity-fed fermentation tanks; long, warm maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel; eighteen months in new French oak followed by additional barrel age before release. Each vintage receives three years total maturation—two and a half in wood and bottle combined—before release to market.
Reputation
Born in 1979 from an unprecedented transatlantic collaboration between Robert Mondavi, the visionary California pioneer, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, Opus One emerged from a 1970 chance encounter in Hawaii and materialized through shared conviction: to fuse Old World tradition with New World terroir into a single expression of uncommon nobility. Located in Oakville, Napa Valley, upon carefully tended benchland warmed by geothermal springs, the estate stands as architecture and philosophy made stone—a reverence for singularity rather than volume.
