Orin Swift Cellars

United States
Dave Phinney creates bold, multi-appellation blends sourced from over 100 California vineyards, emphasizing creative label design as integral to the wine's identity. His method prioritizes fruit-driven ripeness, layered tannin structure, and accessibility across price ranges—from entry-point California blends to age-worthy Napa cabernets.
Dave Phinney founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father's middle name and Swift is his mother's maiden name. The history dates to 1995 when Phinney went to Florence, Italy, and was introduced to wine and how it was made. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself.
AllocationOrin Swift was sold to E&J Gallo in mid-2016 as a corporate acquisition; Phinney remains in consulting role and retains creative control. The Prisoner label was separately sold to Constellation Brands in April 2016 and is no longer under Orin Swift ownership. Production volume estimated at ~600k bottles annually based on pre-2016 75,000-case baseline and subsequent Gallo-era growth. No organic or biodynamic certifications found; farming practice data unavailable. Multi-country distribution confirmed (Europe, Japan, China, Caribbean) but specific importer names not verified from primary sources. Micro-negoce classification reflects Phinney's approach: he owns minimal acreage directly but controls sourcing and blending from extensive regional networks. Signature wines reflect the current active portfolio; The Prisoner (now Constellation's property) and Saldo are excluded despite historical prominence.
