The reputation — the story that sells at the table
Salon is the 'Romanée-Conti of Champagne' — limited production, extreme rarity, extremely high auction prices (2002 Salon trades at $300–$500 per bottle). The wine is an argument for terroir over blending.
Practice
The most singular Champagne — produced only in exceptional years (approximately every 3–5 years), only from the single village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, only from Chardonnay (blanc de blancs), only from a single vineyard within Le Mesnil. Founded by Eugène-Aimé Salon in 1905 — he produced wine only for personal consumption until 1921. Salon is the most convincing argument that a single-village, single-vintage blanc de blancs can achieve the complexity of a multi-vintage house Champagne. Less than 60,000 bottles per vintage are produced — and vintages are not released every year.
