Sea Smoke Estate Vineyards

United States
Every wine made as barrel selection; throughout fermentation and aging, each block and clone combination kept as separate lots, yielding deep understanding of characteristics that inform blending with consistency. Winemaker takes an almost Burgundian approach, with ten distinct Pinot Noir clones hand-harvested, fermented, and aged separately, barrel by barrel, before final blends assembled with precision and restraint.
Sea Smoke was founded in 1999 with the purchase of a rare property in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA north of Santa Barbara that had long been coveted by local winemakers and growers for its clear potential as a site capable of producing extraordinary Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. In 2001 the first vintage was released to wide acclaim, instantly cementing Sea Smoke's status as one of the top producers of Pinot Noir in California.
AllocationCRITICAL SUCCESSION CHANGE: Acquired by Constellation Brands, May 2024. Sale includes 1,100-acre property, 256 acres planted across Sea Smoke Estate and Rita's Crown Vineyard. Key personnel (Gallegos, Schroeder, Malone) retained. No formal US importer identified—estate controls distribution through mailing list and direct relationships. Demeter biodynamic certification held 2016, dropped 2018 (per Château Monty source); currently practices organic/biodynamic without active certification. Production volume: Prince of Pinot cites 13,000 cases estate wine; Wine Spectator reports 20,000 cases total annual (May 2024). Converted to biodynamic farming by 2013 per sources, but certification timeline complex (2016 first Demeter cert, dropped 2018). Website includes Chinese language content on product pages. No dedicated UK/Japan importer information located. Founder Bob Davids created handheld video game software (Draw Poker, Bass Fishing) before entering wine. Estate-only model: all fruit from 172-acre core vineyard plus 61-acre Rita's Crown acquisition (2016).
