Talisman Wine

Sonoma County, United States
Minimalist, native-yeast fermentation honoring vineyard origin. Single vineyard and block designations from eleven partner sites; tiny cuvées of 22 to 335 cases typically. Restrained oak, extended maceration, hand sorting—winemaking dissolves into terroir.
Talisman Wine was founded in 1993 in Sonoma by Scott Rich, a graduate of UC Davis enology program trained under Robert Mondavi and Etude, and Marta Rich, who brought sales discipline from eighteen years at Mondavi. Their first bottling—204 cases of Madonna Vineyard Pinot Noir from Carneros—embodied their philosophy: terroir expression through minimal intervention winemaking.
AllocationProduction volume shows variation across sources: ~1500 cases (2014), 2000+ by 2012, ~3600 as of 2023. Using most recent figure. Farming practice listed as 'sustainable' rather than certified organic per Scott Rich's own statement that vineyards are organic but deliberately uncertified to maintain flexibility. No verified formal certifications found. Importer status limited to direct-to-consumer and some restaurant wholesale in select states per Marta Rich interview; VOS Selections acts as broker/distributor. Signature wines compiled from multiple vineyard-designated releases and numbered Cuvées found on producer website and fact sheets. Estate does not own vineyards outright but partners with grower collaborators. No UK, Japan, or major export presence documented beyond US wholesale.
