Walter Hansel Winery

Sonoma County, United States
Whole-cluster pressed Chardonnay fermented in French oak with minimal intervention. Natural yeast fermentation, minimal fining and filtration. Burgundian-styled wines expressing distinct terroir through clonal precision and low yields of 1.5–2.7 tons per acre.
Walter Hansel planted the first 257 Chardonnay vines in 1978 at the southern tip of Russian River Valley, beginning what would become a family estate devoted to Burgundian expression. His son Stephen founded the winery in 1996, guided by mentor Tom Rochioli, transforming modest vineyard holdings into eighty acres of clonally-distinct Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
AllocationVineyard holdings listed as 80 acres in most sources (32.4 hectares); wine-searcher references 80 hectares (198 acres) total including Lake County Sauvignon Blanc parcel, but Russian River Valley holdings are 80 acres. Production volume: ~5,000 cases Chardonnay annually per Prince of Pinot; vintage-designates 100–750 cases. Certification status: sources reference sustainable practices (Woodland Hills Wine Company tag) but no formal organic or biodynamic certification found in search results. Farming practices emphasize low yields, hand harvesting, leaf-pulling, weather stations—characteristic of sustainable viticulture without certified label. Cahill Lane block is 100% Wente clone, noted as extended hang-time block. No formal UK or Japan importer identified; Polaner Selections confirmed as US importer via Vinous and Polaner direct site. First commercial vintage 1996 (350 cases Chard, 70 Pinot). Stephen Hansel remains owner/operator with minimal full-time staff model.
