Zorzal Wines

Mendoza, Argentina
Minimal oenological intervention with indigenous yeast fermentation. Gravity-based winemaking across four levels minimizes pump usage. Signature Eggo wines fermented and aged in concrete eggs for purity and minerality. Early harvesting preserves freshness and acidity in a cool-climate style counter to regional overripeness.
Zorzal was founded in 2007 by the Michelini brothers, Gerardo, Matias, and Juan Pablo ("Juampi"), completing their first vintage in 2008. The winery and vineyards are located in a section of the Uco Valley called Gualtallary ("Gualta"), outside the town of Tupungato, at approximately 4,500 feet above sea level.
AllocationCRITICAL: Two distinct producers named Zorzal must not be confused. This entry is for ZORZAL WINES (Argentina, Mendoza). Separate producer is Viña Zorzal (Spain, Navarra, Sanz brothers). Argentina producer shows conflicting founding dates in sources: 2007 (most sources cite founding) vs 2008 (winery's own site says 'founded 2008'). First vintage 2008 is consistent across all sources. Farming practice marked as 'organic_practicing' because Skurnik portfolio lists wines as 'Practicing Organic' but no formal organic certification found in search results; WineTourism.com explicitly states 'Zorzal Wines is not an organic wine producer.' Production volume of 500,000 bottles cited by founder Gerardo Michelini in 2021 interview. No specific organic or biodynamic certifications found despite organic-method farming described. Skurnik confirmed as primary US importer (appears on Skurnik producer list and Brazos Wine Imports page). Current proprietor listed as Michelini family plus Canadian and Chilean investors per winery website. No UK or Japan importer data found. Appellation listed as Gualtallary (subzone of Uco Valley, which is subzone of Mendoza). Wine styles documented via Wine Advocate, Vinous, and Wine Spectator reviews. Concrete egg (Eggo) series is signature innovation.
