The reputation — the story that sells at the table
Deiss is a polarising but deeply thoughtful producer. The approach — blending multiple varieties per Grand Cru — is philosophically significant and produces compelling terroir wines.
Practice
Marcel Deiss champions a controversial philosophy: that Alsace wines should be defined by terroir, not by grape variety. His Grand Cru and Lieux-Dits wines are field blends of multiple varieties co-planted and co-fermented in the Burgundian tradition. Bergheim (his most accessible terroir wine) blends Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris from the limestone-clay soils of Bergheim. Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru is the flagship.
