Ricard was invented by Paul Ricard in 1932 after the French government legalised anise spirits (absinthe had been banned since 1915). His formula — star anise, liquorice root, Provencal herbs — became the best-selling pastis in France and one of the best-selling spirits in the world. The brand merged with Pernod in 1975 to form Pernod Ricard. Ricard is the archetype of the pastis category.
