The reputation — the story that sells at the table
Sassicaia is Italy's most internationally recognised wine outside Brunello. Created the Super Tuscan movement. 1985 vintage rated 100pts by Wine Spectator — the first Italian wine to achieve this. Strong global distribution.
Practice
Tenuta San Guido created the 'Super Tuscan' category with Sassicaia — a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine made outside DOC rules on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany. Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon in 1944 on gravel soils similar to Pauillac. Sassicaia went commercial in 1968 and in 1994 became the only single-estate DOC in Italy (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). Giacomo Tachis was the legendary consultant winemaker.
