The Knoll estate in Unterloiben, founded 1872, is among the Wachau's most traditional and least-known internationally — despite producing wines that regularly exceed Pichler in blind tastings. Knoll's approach is distinctly old-fashioned: foot-treading for sorting, extended maceration, old oak for some cuvées, minimal intervention. The Loibner Schütt and Loibner Ried Loibenberg single-vineyard Smaragden are the benchmarks. Emmerich Knoll (fourth generation) is quietly considered by insiders to equal or exceed F.X. Pichler in certain vintages.
