Dirk Niepoort is the Douro's most influential winemaker — simultaneously a Port shipper (fifth generation Dutch family since 1842) and the pioneer of fine Douro table wines. Charme (Tinta Amarela/Trincadeira dominant) and Redoma Tinto (traditional field blend) changed how the world perceived Portuguese table wine in the 1990s. Niepoort's biodynamic viticulture and commitment to old-vine field blends mirrors his philosophical opposition to international varieties and new oak. The estate works with terraced, pre-phylloxera field blends of 20+ indigenous varieties.
