Alvaro Castro's Quinta da Pellada estate is the defining expression of Dão DOC's potential — old-vine Touriga Nacional on granite and schist at 700-900m altitude. The estate farms without irrigation using traditional inter-planting of multiple indigenous varieties. The Primus and Carrocel bottlings demonstrate that Dão can produce Portugal's most elegant and age-worthy reds alongside Douro.
