Marqués de Riscal
Philosophy
Marqués de Riscal established the modern Rioja wine industry in 1858, importing Bordeaux winemaking techniques from the Médoc — including Cabernet Sauvignon (which remains unique to Riscal's estate wines today). The Barón de Chirel — from old Tempranillo and Cabernet vines — is the estate's great wine, demonstrating Rioja's capacity for a Bordeaux-influenced style while maintaining the traditional Gran Reserva aging requirement.
Reputation
Marqués de Riscal is Rioja's founding estate — their 1860 vintage is in the Guggenheim Museum collection. The estate's Barón de Chirel demonstrates Rioja's Bordeaux-inspired heritage and is consistently one of Spain's most internationally collected wines from a traditional producer.
