Ilocos Basi Traditional Producers Cooperative
Philosophy
The Ilocos Basi Traditional Producers Cooperative represents the collective of small traditional Basi producers in the Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur regions of northern Luzon. Basi is a fermented sugarcane wine unique to the Ilocos people, with production methods dating back at least 500 years and preserved through generations of family producers. The cooperative protects the traditional recipe and production methods — using local sugarcane varieties, bark additives, and clay pot fermentation — while providing market access for small producers who might otherwise be displaced by commercial production.
Reputation
The Ilocos Basi cooperative represents an important cultural preservation effort, maintaining living traditions of Filipino fermented beverage production that were nearly lost during the colonial period's suppression of indigenous alcohol production.
