The Igbo Raphia Palm Wine Tappers of Enugu State represent the South-Eastern Nigerian tradition of raphia palm (Raphia hookeri) wine tapping, which produces a distinctive white, milky palm wine quite different from the oil palm variety tapped in coastal regions. Raphia palm wine is traditionally central to Igbo social and ceremonial life — used in wedding ceremonies, funeral rites, new yam festivals (Iri Ji), and daily social bonding.
