The Pepe family's Torano Nuovo estate — producing Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo with an obsessive rejection of all modern winemaking technology. Wines are fermented in concrete, bottled without filtration, and aged for decades before release — Emidio Pepe Montepulciano from the 1980s is still available for purchase from the family. The wines are polarizing (volatile acidity is high by conventional standards) but for devotees represent some of Italy's most authentic and age-worthy expressions.
