Clos Sainte-Magdeleine

Cassis, France
{'description': 'Terraced vineyards on Cap Canaille facing the Mediterranean yield delicate, mineral whites and rosés with saline minerality and maritime herbs. Jonathan Sack employs native yeasts, partial malolactic fermentation, and experimentation with concrete-egg aging and Vermentino exploration, capturing both nerve and sun-kissed unctuousness in wines of singular elegance. | Farming: organic certified'}

The reputation — the story that sells at the table

The most celebrated estate of Cassis — the Zafiropulo family's stunning property on the limestone cliffs above the calanques, producing the appellation's most mineral and complex whites. The estate's dramatic setting — vineyards literally carved from the limestone cliff face above the sea — produces Marsanne and Clairette of extraordinary saline-mineral character that no inland vineyard could replicate. Clos Sainte-Magdeleine blanc is considered the definitive expression of Cassis white wine.

Practice
Founded at century's turn by Jules Savon, whose 1900 World's Fair gold medal established the estate's renown, Clos Sainte Magdeleine traces its lineage through the Sack-Zafiropulo family across four generations. The vineyard's narrative intertwines with Cassis itself—a fishing port of Mediterranean antiquity where vines climb the slopes of Cap Canaille, France's highest sea cliff, terraced above azure waters.
