The reputation — the story that sells at the table
Waipara Valley's founding quality estate, established by the Donaldson family in 1986. Pegasus Bay produces benchmark Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris from limestone-rich soils, combining European discipline with New Zealand's natural fruit generosity. Their aged Riesling is among New Zealand's most celebrated cellar wine.
Practice
Pegasus Bay was established in 1985 by Ivan Donaldson, a neurologist drawn to viticulture after travels through Europe's wine regions, and his wife Christine on north-facing terraces in the Waipara Valley. The Donaldson family, pioneers of modern Canterbury winemaking, planted their vineyard in 1986 on free-draining Glasnevin gravels beneath the sheltering Teviotdale Range, establishing a house defined by patience, rigour and respect for place.
