Tamaryokucha (also called guricha in Kyushu) is Kagoshima's indigenous green tea style — pan-fired rather than steamed, rolled into curved (guri = curved/coiled) needles rather than straight, producing a distinctly different character from standard sencha. The pan-firing (borrowed from Chinese technique, unlike Japan's steaming tradition) produces a roasted sweetness and body absent from steamed sencha. Kagoshima's volcanic soil gives this tamaryokucha a mineral brightness that distinguishes it from similar Kyushu styles.
