Valdepeñas DO

Valdepeñas DO sits on the southern edge of the vast Castilian plateau in the province of Ciudad Real — a landscape of seemingly endless vineyards under an enormous sky. Like its neighbour La Mancha to the north, Valdepeñas produces Cencibel (Tempranillo) from ancient calcareous clay soils at 700m altitude. But Valdepeñas has a distinct identity: the calcareous (limestone) soils produce Tempranillo of greater aromatic finesse and mineral precision than La Mancha's clay-dominated sites. The denomination is named for 'Valley of Stones' — limestone gravel characterises the finest vineyard sites.
