Germany — wine

Ahr Wine Region

Germany's northernmost and most concentrated red wine region — an 87km stretch of the Ahr River valley south of Bonn. Despite its extreme northerly location (50°N latitude), the Ahr's steep slate and volcanic basalt slopes, sheltered south-facing aspect, and the river's thermal influence create conditions for exceptional Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) of remarkable depth, elegance, and ageing potential. The Ahr produces Germany's finest red wines and some of Europe's most surprising.

Year Rating Notes
2023 Full recovery year — excellent growing conditions and rebuilt facilities allowed the Ahr to produce wines matching pre-flood quality standards.
2022 The post-flood recovery vintage — remarkable quality given the devastation. The Ahr's resilience shone through in wines of genuine typicity and regional character.
2020 Outstanding vintage — wines of great depth and mineral precision. Many estates at their peak production before the 2021 flood destroyed cellars and vineyards.
2019 The last great pre-flood Ahr vintage — warm, dry conditions produced extraordinary Spätburgunder concentration. A once-in-a-generation Ahr year.
