France — wine

Volnay AOC

The most feminine and perfumed of the great Côte de Beaune red wine villages — Volnay's Pinot Noir produces wines of extraordinary delicacy, floral complexity, and mineral precision from shallow limestone soils on the steep upper slopes. Unlike the power of Pommard (its immediate southern neighbour), Volnay is characterised by red cherry, rose petals, and a silky-mineral lightness that demands patience but repays with some of Burgundy's most haunting and complex wines. The village has no Grand Cru but possesses some of Burgundy's finest Premier Crus: Caillerets, Champans, Clos des Chênes, Santenots.

Year Rating Notes
2021 Smaller yields due to frost; wines of outstanding freshness and mineral precision. The reduced quantity from d'Angerville's Clos des Ducs is among the most sought-after wine in France.
2020 Rich, generous year — Volnay's delicacy survived the warmth better than heavier Côte de Nuits villages. Good for medium-term drinking.
2019 Outstanding Volnay vintage — warm summer followed by ideal autumn conditions. D'Angerville and Lafarge both produced wines of extraordinary complexity and purity. The finest recent Volnay vintage.
2018 Outstanding year — warm, concentrated Volnay of unusual depth. The finest Clos des Chênes in the modern era according to multiple critics.
