New Zealand — wine

Central Otago GI

The world's southernmost wine region and New Zealand's most dramatic — a high-altitude (200–400m) continental alpine zone in the South Island's interior, far from maritime moderation. The extreme diurnal temperature variation (25°C+ between day and night), schist-loess soils, and intense UV radiation produce Pinot Noir of extraordinary concentration, colour depth, and mineral complexity. Six sub-regions (Bannockburn, Bendigo, Cromwell Basin, Alexandra, Gibbston, Wanaka) each express distinctive terroir variations within the Central Otago identity.

Year Rating Notes
2022 Very good year; warmer conditions produced riper, more accessible Central Otago Pinot Noir with generous fruit. Good for earlier drinking than the intense 2021.
2021 Central Otago's finest vintage of the modern era — cool La Niña conditions extended the growing season dramatically. Burn Cottage and Rippon both produced wines of extraordinary mineral precision and depth. A once-in-a-decade vintage.
2020 Outstanding vintage — balanced growing conditions produced wines of excellent concentration and freshness. The benchmark recent year for Cromwell Basin Pinot Noir.
2019 Good to very good — variable conditions across sub-regions. Bannockburn and Cromwell Basin fared best. Rippon's Mature Vine from this year considered elegant and approachable.
