Vinho Verde Alvarinho Monção e Melgaço

Portugal's most prestigious white wine sub-region — the Monção e Melgaço sub-zone of Vinho Verde, where the Alvarinho grape (Spain's Albariño) grown on granitic soils produces wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity, rich texture, and mineral depth quite unlike the light, fizzy Vinho Verde exported in bulk. The micro-climate here (warmer and drier than the rest of the Minho, protected by mountains to the north and east) allows Alvarinho to achieve full ripeness and concentration. The wines are among Portugal's finest whites and can age for a decade.
