Abruzzo DOC

Abruzzo DOC covers the Adriatic coastal strip and mountain foothills of the Abruzzo region in central-eastern Italy, between the Apennine spine and the sea. The region's wine identity is anchored in two varieties: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (a powerful, deeply coloured indigenous red grape) and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (which, in the hands of top producers, yields wines of startling complexity and longevity). The region's most celebrated producer, Valentini, demonstrated in the 1970s that Trebbiano d'Abruzzo could produce age-worthy whites of extraordinary complexity, while the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo rosé style remains one of Italy's most characterful and food-versatile rosé wines. The Abruzzo's position between mountains and sea gives its wines a distinctive combination of southern Italian ripeness and Apennine mineral freshness.
