Tierra de Almería is a Vinos de la Tierra (IGP) zone in the Almería province of southeastern Andalucía — one of Europe's driest and sunniest regions, sharing latitude with North Africa. The region's extreme continental-Mediterranean climate (200mm annual rainfall, intense UV radiation, significant diurnal variation from interior altitude) creates demanding conditions that stress vines and concentrate the small berries of indigenous varieties including Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, Airén and Macabeo. The interior mountain ranges — particularly the Sierra de los Filabres — provide elevations of 800–1,400 metres where the temperature range creates wines of surprising freshness and aromatic complexity despite the region's hot reputation. Almería's wines have been long dismissed as blending material; a new generation of producers working with old vines and high-altitude sites are establishing the region's independent identity.
