Canada — wine

Black Sage Road

The arid benchland running north from Osoyoos on the east side of the valley, effectively Canada's only desert wine zone. Deep sandy soils, minimal rainfall, and extreme heat force dry-farmed vines to reach deep for moisture, concentrating flavours in small berries. Syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and viognier reach physiological ripeness here that is unattainable elsewhere in Canada.
