Yakima Valley

Washington's first AVA and still its backbone: a 75-kilometre valley carved by the Yakima River through the Columbia Plateau, with vineyards stepping from valley floor to elevated benches. The extraordinary diversity of the valley — from the cool Rattlesnake Hills at its west end to the desert heat of Snipes Mountain and the Red Mountain benchmark near Benton City — produces everything from delicate riesling to dense, structured syrah. Home to several of Washington's oldest benchmark vineyards including Weinbau, Dionysus, and Boushey.

Year Rating Notes
2024 94 Yakima Valley's 2024 showed outstanding balance after several challenging years. Riesling and other aromatics captured exceptional freshness; Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah built concentration with excellent acid preservation through a long, measured growing season.
2023 87 River-cooled nights preserved acid in a hot-summer year. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Syrah excelled. Larger volume than previous years as vines returned to normal yield. Consistent quality across the valley floor and Horse Heaven interface.
2022 91 Sustained warmth accelerated ripening across all varieties. High-elevation blocks in Rattlesnake Hills and Naches Heights showed the best balance. Syrah and Grenache reached exceptional phenolic maturity. One of the strongest Yakima Valley vintages for aromatic whites despite the heat.
2021 85 Heat dome effects moderated by Yakima River valley topography and elevation. High-elevation sites in Rattlesnake Hills and Naches Heights outperformed valley floor. Riesling from cooler pockets retained acid structure despite extreme June temperatures. Resilient vintage for the appellation.
2020 90 Washington's distance from the major Oregon fire zones benefited Yakima Valley. Excellent Riesling and Syrah vintage with no significant weather disruptions. Cool nights through the growing season preserved acid while heat units accumulated for ripeness.
2019 93 Extended cool finish to a hot summer — the Yakima ideal. Benchmark Riesling with lime-zest acidity and stone fruit depth. Syrah produced the most complex, pepper-inflected expression of the decade. A vintage that showcased every variety grown here at its best.
2017 88 Good season with warmer-than-average temperatures producing ripe, accessible wines. Less complexity than 2016 but very good early-drinking quality.
2016 95 Long warm season delivered exceptional Yakima Valley Cabernet and Syrah with ripe tannins and extended aromatic complexity. The year that established Yakima as a world-class red wine zone.
2015 93 Extraordinary heat accumulation pushed Yakima Valley Cabernet and Syrah to levels of ripeness rarely achieved. The vintage confirmed Yakima's position as a world-class red wine zone.
2014 94 Yakima Valley delivered a classic 2014 with measured heat accumulation and no damaging temperature spikes. Riesling and other aromatics captured extraordinary freshness; Cabernet and Merlot built concentrated, structured wines with excellent cellaring potential.
