Germany — wine

Saar

The Saar tributary south of Trier represents Mosel-Saar-Ruwer's most austere, mineral extreme. Scharzhofberg and Ockfener Bockstein are the benchmark vineyards. Egon Müller's Scharzhofberger TBA routinely achieves six-figure auction prices — the most expensive German wine. In average vintages the Saar's extreme coolness can produce barely ripe Riesling; in exceptional vintages it produces Kabinett and Spätlese of unparalleled steely precision.

Year Rating Notes
2022 excellent
2021 exceptional
2020 excellent
2019 97 Another benchmark year for the Saar — extended warm autumn allowed selective harvesting of Auslese and above. Egon Müller's wines from 2019 are considered equal to 2015.
2018 very_good
2017 96 Perfect Saar conditions — warm but not extreme, preserving the Scharzhofberg's signature steely acidity alongside excellent ripeness. Kabinett and Spätlese of extraordinary tension.
2015 98 The Saar's greatest vintage in 30 years — the extreme summer heat that challenged other regions was moderated by the Saar valley's altitude and river influence. Egon Müller's TBA from this vintage is one of Germany's most celebrated wines.
2007 96 The great German vintage of the 2000s — warm, late harvest enabled BA, TBA, and Eiswein production across the Saar. These wines are now in prime drinking window (2023-2035).
