Alentejo DOC
Alentejo — 'beyond the Tagus' — covers southern Portugal's vast cork oak plains. The region's hot, dry continental climate produces the opposite of Vinho Verde's freshness: ripe, full-bodied reds from Aragonez (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira, and Touriga Nacional. Cork is Alentejo's dominant agricultural product (Portugal produces 50% of the world's cork). The herdade (estate) system — large land holdings compared to northern Portugal's fragmented quintas — allows consistent commercial production. Esporão is the international benchmark; Mouchão's Tonel reserve is a cult wine commanding significant prices.
